Product Description
Measuring soil moisture has never been easier! The needle in the meter indicates the precise soil humidity. No electric hookups or batteries are needed. Just push in the probe and read the results. Taking readings at different depths quickly reveals the need for more or less water.
How To Use Tips
Probe soil at 2" intervals starting next to the stem or trunk and moving gradually outward. Use the meter a day or so after watering. When planning an irrigation system, keep in mind that large plant leaves will shed overhead water. Soil may be wet at the outer edges of the plant, but the root ball may still be dry. Plants should be evenly watered, all the way around, from the base of the plant to the outer edge of its canopy (drip line). Reading soil moisture at different depths will quickly tell you if you need to water longer or less often. Slow, deep and infrequent watering is normally best for most plants. As potted plants age, the roots tend to become so thickly massed that water will simply run down the interior sides of the pot, and not penetrate the root ball at all. Slip the plant out of its pot to see if this is the case. If so, repot the plant, but before you do, use a razor blade or sharp knife and score the sides of the root ball in several spots around the plant. Don't cut deeply, just lightly. New roots will develop at these points and radiate outward from the main root ball. Otherwise, roots will continue to girdle (wrap) even if the plant is in fresh potting soil in a larger pot!
